Space Maintainers in Inglewood

Space Maintainers in Inglewood

Space Maintainers in Inglewood for Children With Early Baby Teeth Loss

When a child loses a baby tooth too early, neighboring teeth can start drifting into the gap within weeks. A space maintainer is a small pediatric dental appliance that holds that gap open so the permanent tooth underneath has room to come in straight. Families looking for space maintainers in Inglewood turn to our pediatric team to guard a child's bite before crowding starts. If your little one recently lost a primary molar, acting early makes a real difference.

Who We Help with Pediatric Space Maintainers in Inglewood

A space maintainer helps a child who has lost a primary tooth well before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. When a baby molar is lost early to decay, injury, or an extraction, the gap it leaves needs protection while the adult tooth forms below the gum. Baby teeth space maintainers keep that spot open until the time is right.

Your child may be a strong candidate if:

  • A baby tooth came out or was removed months or years ahead of the natural timeline
  • A primary molar is missing while the permanent tooth is still forming underneath
  • Nearby teeth have begun to tilt or shift toward an open space
  • A dental exam shows a crowding risk during the mixed dentition stage

Dental space maintainers come in fixed and removable styles, and the right choice depends on your child's needs. For a nervous or anxious child, we slow the pace and let them get comfortable with the tools first. For patients who need care quickly after a knocked-out tooth, we can check the space and plan the appliance at the same visit. In cases where a child has several missing primary teeth or a more complex bite, we may suggest a bilateral option such as a lingual arch or Nance arch to hold both sides.

Benefits of Choosing Space Maintainers at Toothopia Dental in Inglewood

Holding space early is far simpler than fixing a crowded bite later. When teeth slide into an empty gap, the permanent tooth can erupt rotated, blocked, or out of line, which often leads to braces later. Good dental space maintenance now spares your child that longer path.

Choosing a space maintainer appliance now gives your child real, lasting advantages:

  • Preserved space so the permanent tooth erupts in the right position
  • A lower risk of dental crowding, malocclusion, and misaligned teeth
  • Support for healthy dental development and proper tooth spacing
  • A small, comfortable fit that most children adjust to within days

Step-by-Step Space Maintainers Treatment at Our Inglewood Clinic

Treatment starts with a close look at how your child's teeth are developing, then moves to a custom-fit appliance. Here is the journey:

  1. Exam and imaging. We check the open space and take digital X-rays to see where the permanent tooth sits and roughly when it should erupt.
  2. Appliance selection. Based on which tooth is missing and where, we choose the right type, such as a band and loop, distal shoe, lingual arch, or Nance arch.
  3. We take a fast digital scan or impression so the appliance fits your child's mouth precisely.
  4. At a short follow-up, we cement a fixed maintainer in place or fit a removable one, then check your child's comfort.
  5. We track the permanent tooth as it develops and remove the appliance once it is ready to come through.

Most placements are quick and comfortable, and children usually settle in within a few days.

I came here because my tooth was hurting. My gum had receded and exposed the root. They told me that my gums were never going to grow back and and that a deep cleaning was required to stop the recession and that later on skin grafting could restore my gums over the root. They also told me I had 12 cavities that needed to be filled. My prior dentist a year earlier told me my teeth were fine. They canceled my regular cleaning, as it was not sufficient for the amount of disarray in my mouth, and took me into a little room to discuss my several thousand dollar treatment solution. The woman there told me that I needed to go to my employer and get the higher level dental insurance so that I would only need to pay about $3k out of pocket. I left in a panic and asked my parents if we had a family history of complete mouth disintegration around age 30. They said no, and advised me to find another dentist. I bought a water pick and spent a few months religiously cleaning my gums and using the fancy mouthwash and my gums grew back over the root and no longer hurts(that advice was thanks to Dr. Google). Then, I found another dentist who took another set of X-rays and was astounded to hear him finish his exam and say “everything looks good, no cavities, just some minor plaque buildup and we’ll get that off right now”. Hope this can help someone else save some hard earned money.
