Sedation Dentistry Services at Toothopia Dental in Culver City
Dental sedation is built into how we care for anxious and sensitive patients. We pair it with everyday treatments so you can finally move forward on work you have been putting off. Visits we commonly support:
- Routine cleanings and exams for patients with severe anxiety or a strong gag reflex
- Fillings, crowns, and other restorative work
- Longer or multiple procedures combined into fewer appointments
- Care for sensitive teeth and gums that makes ordinary visits hard to tolerate
Sedation in dentistry is a controlled, dentist-supervised way to keep you relaxed while we work. If you are unsure which option fits, we will talk it through first.
When We Recommend Sedation Dentistry for Patients in Culver City
We recommend sedation when fear, sensitivity, or the complexity of a procedure would otherwise make treatment hard to finish comfortably. The call is always based on your health and your needs, made after a short review. We often suggest it in cases like these:
- If a patient feels intense anxiety or has avoided care for years, sedation helps them get through the visit calmly.
- For patients with an urgent or painful problem, it lets us treat the issue in one focused appointment.
- In complex cases involving prior failed treatment, bone loss, or other medical factors, sedation supports longer, more involved work.
- For patients who want faster results, it lets us combine several procedures into fewer visits.
A strong gag reflex or trouble sitting still for long stretches can also make sedation the kinder choice.

Why Patients Choose Our Sedation Dentistry Team in Culver City
People come to us because we take dental fear seriously and plan around it. Many patients had a rough experience elsewhere, so we slow down, explain each step, and keep you in control with simple hand signals. What sets our approach apart:
- A pre-treatment consultation to review your medical history and match the right sedation level to you
- Continuous monitoring of your vital signs so you stay safe from start to finish
- A calm, unhurried pace built around your comfort, not the clock
- Clear answers about what you will feel, so nothing catches you off guard
If anxiety has made you cancel appointments before, this is the place to try again. Call our team at 310-643-6611 to ask about your options.
Types of Sedation Dentistry Available at Our Culver City Dental Clinic
We offer several levels of sedation so the method matches your anxiety and the treatment ahead. The right choice depends on your health, comfort needs, and how involved the procedure is.
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): A mild option breathed through a small nasal mask that blends oxygen with nitrous gas. It works fast, keeps you awake and responsive, and wears off quickly, so you can usually drive yourself home.
- Oral sedation: A prescribed tablet, often a benzodiazepine, taken before your visit for deeper relaxation. You stay conscious but calm, and many patients remember little of the procedure.
- IV sedation: Sedative medication given through a vein for moderate to deeper sedation, useful for very anxious patients or longer, complex work.
Each option pairs with a local anesthetic so the area stays numb. Some patients ask about sleep dentistry: deeper sedation can feel like a short nap, though you stay able to respond throughout. We help you weigh onset, duration, and recovery first.
How Sedation Dentistry Works at Our Culver City Dental Office
Sedation follows a clear, careful sequence so you always know what comes next. A typical visit unfolds like this:
- Consultation and health review: We go over your medical history, medications, and anxiety triggers, then recommend a sedation level.
- Day-of preparation: Depending on your option, you take a tablet beforehand or receive nitrous oxide or IV sedation in the chair.
- Local anesthetic: We numb the treatment area so you feel pressure at most, not pain.
- Monitoring: We track your vital signs and check in with you throughout, adjusting as needed.
- Wake-up and review: As the sedation eases, we walk you through aftercare before you head home.
For oral and IV sedation, you will need a trusted adult to drive you home, since the effects last several hours.

Who Our Dental Team Recommends Sedation Dentistry For in Culver City
Sedation dentistry helps more than just nervous patients, though easing dental anxiety and dental phobia is one of its biggest jobs. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Feel intense fear of the dentist or have avoided care for years
- Have a strong gag reflex that makes routine work difficult
- Struggle to stay comfortable sitting for long treatments
- Have very sensitive teeth or gums
- Need several procedures and want fewer, easier visits
Not every option suits every person, so we review your health first. Pregnant patients and those with certain conditions may need a tailored plan, and we will be honest about what is safe for you.
Sedation Dentistry Recovery at Our Culver City Dental Office
Recovery depends on your sedation, and the Toothopia Dental team prepares you for it before treatment even begins. Nitrous oxide fades within minutes, so most patients return to normal activity right away. Oral and IV sedation take longer to clear, so you may feel drowsy the rest of the day. Here is what we ask you to plan for:
- Arrange a ride home and a quiet day after oral or IV sedation
- Skip driving, work, and big decisions until the medication fully wears off
- Drink water, rest, and eat the light foods we recommend at checkout
- Mild grogginess or short gaps in memory of the visit are normal and pass quickly
Before you leave, we hand you written aftercare instructions and a direct line to reach us. Most people feel like themselves by the next morning, and our team checks in to make sure your recovery stays smooth.

What Our Sedation Dentistry Patients in Culver City Say About Us
I'm forever grateful for Toothopia and all their whole staff! Every time I come here I feel incredibly welcomed and everyone is so friendly, understanding and kind. A big thanks to Kelly and Georgina! I still have a lot of work to get done on my teeth but today I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Nadia and Victoria for taking care of me today and doing an amazing job on teeth!
The staff is outstanding, always helpful. Kelly has been a lot of help with keeping my balance straight, lol. She good at what she does. Dr. Michelle does outstanding work, I highly recommend her for all your dental work. My crown fit perfect, the color matched all the rest of my teeth. I’m so pleased with the work that I’ve had done.
I came here because my tooth was hurting. My gum had receded and exposed the root. They told me that my gums were never going to grow back and and that a deep cleaning was required to stop the recession and that later on skin grafting could restore my gums over the root. They also told me I had 12 cavities that needed to be filled. My prior dentist a year earlier told me my teeth were fine. They canceled my regular cleaning, as it was not sufficient for the amount of disarray in my mouth, and took me into a little room to discuss my several thousand dollar treatment solution. The woman there told me that I needed to go to my employer and get the higher level dental insurance so that I would only need to pay about $3k out of pocket. I left in a panic and asked my parents if we had a family history of complete mouth disintegration around age 30. They said no, and advised me to find another dentist. I bought a water pick and spent a few months religiously cleaning my gums and using the fancy mouthwash and my gums grew back over the root and no longer hurts(that advice was thanks to Dr. Google). Then, I found another dentist who took another set of X-rays and was astounded to hear him finish his exam and say “everything looks good, no cavities, just some minor plaque buildup and we’ll get that off right now”. Hope this can help someone else save some hard earned money.

Common Questions Patients in Culver City Ask About Sedation Dentistry
Yes. Sedation dentistry is safe at our Culver City clinic when carefully planned and monitored by our dental team. We review your medical history, choose the right sedation level, and monitor you throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.
The answer depends on the type of sedation and the treatment it supports, so the clearest picture comes from a consultation. We review your needs and explain your options before any treatment begins. Contact our team and we will walk you through what to expect.
Yes, in most cases, you will need someone to drive you home after sedation dentistry.
If you receive oral sedation or IV sedation, the effects can last for several hours after your appointment. During this time, your reaction time, coordination, and judgment may still be affected, so it is not safe for you to drive yourself.
With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), the situation is different. Its effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, and many patients are able to drive themselves home after a short recovery period in the office. Your dental team will always confirm what’s appropriate for your specific case before you leave.
