Pulpotomy (Baby Root Canals) in Culver City

Pulpotomy (Baby Root Canals) in Culver City

Pulpotomy (Baby Root Canals) in Culver City Before Tooth Extraction Becomes Necessary

A pulpotomy, often called a baby root canal, removes infected pulp from the crown of a decayed primary tooth while keeping the healthy root pulp in place. This treatment can save your child's tooth before an extraction becomes the only option. If your little one has a deep cavity, a lingering toothache, or swelling near a baby tooth, a pulpotomy (baby root canals) in Culver City may stop the infection and protect the space that adult teeth will need later. Keep reading to learn when a pulpotomy is needed, how the gentle process works, and why local families trust our pediatric team. Call our office now to schedule a same-week visit for your child.

If your child is in pain right now, please do not wait for it to pass. Call 310-643-6611 to have them seen quickly.

When Your Child May Need a Pulpotomy in Our Culver City Clinic

A pulpotomy becomes necessary when tooth decay or an injury reaches the soft pulp inside a baby tooth, causing inflammation or infection that a simple filling cannot fix. Spotting these signs early often means we can save the tooth instead of removing it.
Watch for these warning signs in your child:

  • A toothache that lingers or keeps coming back, especially at night
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum around one tooth
  • A baby tooth that looks darker or discolored than the others
  • A deep, visible cavity or a chipped tooth after a fall

Not every cavity needs this treatment. When decay stays in the outer layers of the tooth, a standard filling is enough. A pulpotomy is reserved for cases where the pulp tissue is inflamed but the root is still healthy enough to save. We confirm this with a gentle exam and dental X-rays before recommending any next step.

Step-by-Step Baby Root Canals Process at Our Culver City Clinic

The baby root canal treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that usually takes about thirty to forty-five minutes for a single tooth. Here is exactly what your child can expect from start to finish:

  1. Exam and X-rays. We take a dental X-ray to see how far the decay reaches and to confirm the root is healthy.
  2. Gentle numbing. The area is fully numbed so your child stays comfortable, and we explain each step in kid-friendly words.
  3. Removing the infected pulp. Only the damaged pulp in the crown of the tooth is removed, while the healthy pulp in the roots is preserved.
  4. Cleaning and disinfecting. The pulp chamber is carefully cleaned and disinfected to clear out the infection.
  5. Soothing the tooth. A calming medicated material is placed to settle the tooth and protect the remaining tissue.
  6. Restoring the tooth. Most treated teeth receive a stainless steel crown, the most durable way to protect a baby molar until it falls out naturally.

Most children handle the visit well, and many feel real relief from pain the same day. Aftercare is simple: soft foods for about a day, gentle brushing around the treated tooth, and a return to normal activity within a few hours.

Not sure whether your child needs one tooth treated or a fuller plan? Book a consultation and we will walk you through every option.

Why Parents Choose Toothopia for Pulpotomy (Baby Root Canals) in Culver City

Parents choose Toothopia Dental because we pair gentle pediatric care with the clinical skill to save teeth that other offices might pull. Our whole approach is built around keeping children calm and preserving natural teeth whenever we can.

Families come to us for:

  • A child-friendly team that explains treatment in simple, reassuring language
  • Sedation options for anxious, sensitive, or very young children
  • Digital X-rays that lower radiation and speed up diagnosis
  •  A strong focus on preserving primary teeth to hold space for adult teeth
  • Same-week appointments for children who are in pain

We see every kind of case. For the nervous child, we move slowly and offer calming support so the visit feels safe. For a child in urgent pain from a dental infection, we prioritize same-day care. In cases where decay is more advanced or a previous filling has failed, we carefully assess whether a pulpotomy can still save the tooth or whether another option is a better fit. Whatever the situation, we talk it through with you in plain language.

I came here because my tooth was hurting. My gum had receded and exposed the root. They told me that my gums were never going to grow back and and that a deep cleaning was required to stop the recession and that later on skin grafting could restore my gums over the root. They also told me I had 12 cavities that needed to be filled. My prior dentist a year earlier told me my teeth were fine. They canceled my regular cleaning, as it was not sufficient for the amount of disarray in my mouth, and took me into a little room to discuss my several thousand dollar treatment solution. The woman there told me that I needed to go to my employer and get the higher level dental insurance so that I would only need to pay about $3k out of pocket. I left in a panic and asked my parents if we had a family history of complete mouth disintegration around age 30. They said no, and advised me to find another dentist. I bought a water pick and spent a few months religiously cleaning my gums and using the fancy mouthwash and my gums grew back over the root and no longer hurts(that advice was thanks to Dr. Google). Then, I found another dentist who took another set of X-rays and was astounded to hear him finish his exam and say “everything looks good, no cavities, just some minor plaque buildup and we’ll get that off right now”. Hope this can help someone else save some hard earned money.

If you are searching for a pediatric dentist near me who takes your plan, call our Culver City office and we will confirm the details and explain any out-of-pocket portion clearly.

Do You Offer Sedation for Pediatric Root Canals in Culver City?

Yes. We offer sedation options to help children who feel anxious, or who are very young, stay calm and comfortable during a pulpotomy.
